VE/VJ Day 75 - COMMUNITY BUNTING PROJECT

VE Day was a celebration of ‘Victory in Europe’. It happened towards the end of the war in May 1945. Lots of people in Britain planned big street parties outside their homes and brought decorations, food and music along...anything they had to share, including making their own bunting.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of this momentous day, we would like all community groups, schools and individuals to make their own special section of bunting. This could include your school emblem, business/group logo, regiment/squadron/ship crest or any other image that is special to you and celebrates community or the end of the war in Europe.

The ladies from the Women’s Institute (WI) in Downend will fix them together in order for it to be displayed as one large piece of bunting in Page Park. We will then organise this to be displayed at various locations around the community, specifically in the schools that get involved.

Please deliver/post all finished pieces to our friends at Fabric Plus, 19 Badminton Road, Downend, BS16 6BB. You can visit their website here.

The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.

We inspire women through experiences, knowledge and skills. These are passed down through generations and continually updated to reflect the lives of women today.

Whatever your reason for joining, we offer all kinds of opportunities to all kinds of women.

For some, it’s a chance to meet people and catch up with friends. For others, it’s a way to learn valuable life skills and make a difference in their communities through WI campaigns.
